Creating a rotating animated gif in GIMP (using the Mura Meister Copies Script)

Post#1 by trandoductin » 03 Oct 2016, 20:57

For this example, we'll use the Mura Meister Copies Script
And we'll use our web icon to illustrate.
1. Open the image we want to create as our rotating animation.

2. Run Mura Meister Copies script with settings like below (untick "Merge Layers"). Our image is 64x64. So we'll use 32x32 as our Rotating Center.

Step 3. and 4. are optional, we're doing it to crop the whole image (all layers) down to original size so that our animation still fits inside 64x64 canvas.
3. Script will generate layers and leave them as they are and not merge them. Now click the bottom layer, Right click, and select "Alpha to selection".

4. Select menu Image then "Crop to Selection".

creating_animated_web_icon_in_GIMP_04_Image_Crop_to_Selection.png # (23.4 KiB) Viewed 1836 times (Watermarked | Thumbnail)
5. Rename all the layers to end with "(#ms) (replace)" where # is the number of milliseconds we want the layer to be visible for before switching to the next frame. "(replace)" is to say that each frame will replace previous frame. To rename a layer, just double click on the name, and it'll let you edit the layer name (Hit Enter/Return when you're done editing the name). Or if you don't want to rename layers manually, you can do it quickly with the help of Rename Layers Script For Animated .gifs animation

creating_animated_web_icon_in_GIMP_05_Rename_layers_to_specify_delay_and_replace.png # (40.32 KiB) Viewed 1836 times (Watermarked | Thumbnail)
6. Now let's see how our animation looks, Select menu "Filters" then "Animation" then "Playback".

creating_animated_web_icon_in_GIMP_06_Filters_Animation_Playback.png # (46.56 KiB) Viewed 1836 times (Watermarked | Thumbnail)
7. A new window will pop up, click "Play" to view our animation. Then close that window once we're happy with our animation.

creating_animated_web_icon_in_GIMP_07_Click_Play_To_View_Animation.png # (12.57 KiB) Viewed 1836 times (Watermarked | Thumbnail)
8. Now we export the file to animated gif. Click menu "File" then "Export As...". A window will pop up, give it a filename ending in ".gif" and click Export.

creating_animated_web_icon_in_GIMP_08_File_Export_As_Give_Filename_Export.png # (57.66 KiB) Viewed 1836 times (Watermarked | Thumbnail)
9. Then another window will pop up, make sure we tick the "As Animation" otherwise it won't save as animation. Then click "Export".

creating_animated_web_icon_in_GIMP_9_As_Animation_Export.png # (18.5 KiB) Viewed 1836 times (Watermarked | Thumbnail)
10. And this is our animated result file.

We can now use this image on webpages or have it as a web icon like our Gimp Learn animated web icon.

it's okay but you might want to use the Rename Layers Script
so that each layer replaces content rather than combined.

The PC letters over gradient looks very nice.

I just had to make a rotating logo for the forum. Hope it passes the test (or tester).
